Being a true generalist has it's advantages
For my clients, the advantage is that they don't need to seek out multiple specialists to get the job done. This is especially true when it comes to the residential construction business.
I used to skip school to draw house plans in high school. No, really.
I've mentioned how I love solving problems, and my first internship in residential drafting as a sixteen-year-old junior in high school was where my passion for visual communication and professional problem solving really began. I really did skip school sometimes to finish a set of plans that had me stumped the day before. By the time I graduated college with my graphic design degree, I had nearly ten years of drafting experience on my resume.
In a very competitive job market, a series of cold calls led me to a job that would allow me to leverage those drafting skills to gain graphic design experience. I joined a boutique design/build firm in Charlotte, splitting my time between drafting and in-house graphic design work.

When I joined the firm, Phase II of an exclusive neighborhood of Craftsman style homes called Windover Hill was just getting underway. The brand aesthetic for Phase I had been established by an agency, so my job was to extend the brand system as needed to market Phase II. As I worked on the plans for the houses, I also helped to illustrate the front elevations of the houses, create marketing brochures of the floor plans, and design a website to promote the community.
I didn't have experience in coding yet, so I was also tasked with sourcing a developer to work with to build the website, selecting a printer to produce the printed materials, and managing the production of the site and the printed marketing materials, as well. I conducted regular site visits to photograph the latest builds, and did photo retouching for my photos as well as those provided by a professional landscape photographer.
I received two of the greatest compliments of my budding career while working on this project
- The Principal of the firm could not tell the difference between my photos and the ones provided by the professional landscape photographer.
- One of the Project Managers, who was working on a large TND neighborhood concept, saw the website and said, "This is the best website I've ever seen for a new neighborhood."
